Специализированный орган Генеральной Ассамблеи ООН, образованный в 1964 г. с целью содействия экономическому развитию стран третьего мира. Основная работа проводится на конференциях, которые созываются раз в четыре года. Особое внимание уделяется следующим проблемам развивающихся стран: а) экспорту продукции обрабатывающей промышленности (предпринимаются попытки согласовать свободный от тарифов и квот доступ их товаров на рынки развитых стран в дополнение к тем уступкам, которые были достигнуты через ВТО (см. World trade organization)); б) экспорту сырьевых товаров (удалось продлить международные товарные соглашения, целью которых является стабилизация экспортных цен на сырье как средство поддержания валютных доходов производителей в развивающихся странах); в) экономической помощи (проводилась работа, направленная на увеличение финансовой помощи и получение доступа к современным технологиям, однако без заметного успеха из-за нестабильной экономической ситуации в мире).
